When to Splurge on Makeup

Drugstore or Department Store? Budget or Luxury?

When does it make sense to spend more money on your cosmetics and when is it unnecessary? woman with money picture

In today’s economy in particular, we need to be very careful about where we spend our money.  With more and more drugstore brand companies making ‘higher-tech’ cosmetics, it is difficult to decide whether it is worth it to spend extra money on the latest high-fashion makeup.  Here are a few guidelines to follow before you take out your credit card:

  1. Can you afford it? Seems like a no-brainer question, but for those of us who are makeup junkies, treating yourself to a fancy lipstick is a way of cheering up when times are tough. If you don’t have the spare cash, save up or look at all the new lipsticks at the drugstore.
  2. Is the color right for you? If you just can’t find the right color in the drugstore brands, you may have to resort to the more expensive ones.  There’s nothing worse than looking like you’re wearing a mask because you have on the wrong color foundation.
  3. Is the formula right for you? While there is a wider range of budget products out there than ever before, it still can’t compare to the huge diversity of special brand-name cosmetics.  Try the budget one first, if it looks right.  If it doesn’t work for you, return it and try something else.  Just keep your receipts!

Murad Acne Treatment Concealer Review

Description:

Murad’s Acne Treatment Concealer was developed by a dermatologist, Dr. Howard Murad, as part of his line of acne treatment products.  It is oil-free, contains 2% salicylic acid for treating acne, Vitamin A for regulating oil production, and green tea extracts for protecting against the environment. Murad’s concealer comes in a stick form and was created to both treat and cover acne blemishes.

Summary of Reviews:

People seem to either love or hate Murad’s concealer.  Murad quotes one of its reviews from Lucky magazine which says:

“86% of users experienced overall better skin in 2 weeks.”

Reviews from reputable sites, like Sephora.com and Makeupalley.com, show a more diverse response.  Only a few reviewers said that their acne was cleared up by the concealer.  However, most people did say that their acne did not get worse, which is a significant positive for anyone with acne when it comes to using makeup.  Most reviewers also said that it provides good coverage, though it can be hard to blend unless you use a concealer brush.  For most people, it also lasted several hours and just needed some touching up during the day.  Luckily, it comes in a very portable stick that is easy to throw in your bag.

How to Apply Foundation

Learning how to apply foundation the correct way can make all the difference between looking natural and flawless, or looking as if you are wearing a mask. With a few basic guidelines, you can achieve the flawless look and become a pro at applying your own foundation. You might even get asked to start doing your friends’ makeup!

If you’ve prepared your skin with gentle cleansing, acne treatment, and moisturizer it should be in good shape for makeup.  After preparing your skin, you should have applied concealer wherever needed, though some people prefer to apply concealer after their foundation.  Now you are ready to put your preferred foundation on.

As with concealer, your best tools are your fingers.  However, many people like to use a makeup sponge or a foundation brush.  If you do use these, make sure they are very clean.  Otherwise, they will deposit bacteria back on your face and irritate your acne further.  Personally, I don’t like using sponges or brushes since they absorb too much of the foundation and then it gets used up faster.

Follow these steps to ensure an smooth, natural looking finish with your foundation:

How to Apply Concealer

Some people recommend applying concealer after foundation while others say you should put it on before.  I prefer to put it on first so that the foundation can even out any differences
in color.  You can always touch up with a little extra concealer afterward.picture of concealer

To apply your concealer, all you really need are your fingers. You may also use a concealer brush, which can by useful in getting at little crevices, like around your nose.  If
you do use a concealer brush, make sure it is very clean or it will deposit bacteria right
where you need it least, back on your acne.  This will only make your acne worse.  Clean
the brush every day with a little mild soap and water.  If you do it at night the brush will be
dry by morning.
