Keep your face matte all daySummer has been well under way here in the U.S. and temperatures have been literally off the charts for the past few weeks. With the increasing temperatures unfortunately comes increasing oil production on your face. Even though the dewy, glowy look is trendy, many people with oily, acne-prone skin prefer a matte – but natural- face.

Here are my top 6 tips for how to keep your face matte all day, all summer long.

 1. Cleanse in the A.M

If you don’t normally cleanse your face in the morning throughout the year, you should definitely start cleansing in the A.M for the summer. During the summer, temperatures at night increase, which causes your skin to produce oil and sweat during the night. Make sure to wash all of that nastiness away in the morning with a gentle cleanser- my favorite is Aveeno’s Calming Foaming cleanser.

2. Use a Primer

After you apply your moisturizer and SPF, try using a primer to create smooth base, mattify your skin, and give your makeup something to cling to so it doesn’t slide off throughout the day. I love Tarte’s Clean Slate Poreless Primer, which was recently reformulated and repackaged but works just as well. For those with incredibly oily skin, trying spreading a tiny bit of Milk of Magnesia over your oiliest areas to completely block out oil.

3. Change your Foundation

The heavy, creamy foundation you use during the winter may not be the best for your skin during the summertime. Try switching it up and using a lightweight, water-based foundation like Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua. If you need more coverage or makeup that lasts a longer time, try using a lightweight long-wearing foundation. Revlon’s new Colorstay Whipped Creme Foundation has all the staying power of the classic Colorstay foundation, but with a lighter, more summer-appropriate texture.

4. Powder it up!

Many people tend to skip powder during the winter and spring, but during the summer a good powder is essential to keeping a matte face all day. Dust a matte translucent powder or powder foundation over your entire face, focusing on your T-zone. Two great powders are Maybelline Dream Matte and Rimmel Stay Matte- both give a beautiful, natural matte finish that lasts for hours.

5. Set it with a Spray

If you need your makeup to last a long time or have very oily skin, try setting your makeup with a setting or finishing spray. After you’ve finished all your makeup (face, cheeks, eyes, etc.) hold the bottle about 6 inches away from your face and light mist it with 1-3 sprays. The Skindinavia Makeup Finishing Spray and Urban Decay All Nighter Long-Lasting  Setting Spray both have great reviews and are well known in the beauty community; for a budget option, try e.l.f Makeup Mist and Set for a fraction of the price.

6. Blot and touch up

Even with the best makeup, your sweat and natural oils will break it down over the course of the day. When you feel your skin is starting to look shiny, first blot away the oil with blotting papers like Clean & Clear Blotting Sheets. Then, touch up any smudged foundation and dust fresh powder over your T-zone. This way, your makeup will look as fresh and matte as when you first applied it.

Hope these tips help you on your quest to keep a beautiful, matte face all day long during the summer!
