Best Mineral Makeup: Bare Escentuals
Review:
I have tried different brands of mineral makeup, including drugstore brands and those available only online. There is one brand that stood head and shoulders above the others – Bare Escentuals bareMinerals (often misspelled as bare mineral makeup or bare essentials makeup). Their price was an excellent value compared to others, especially for those starting out for whom the bareMinerals Get Started Kit is ideal.
Drugstore brands are certainly cheaper (like Physician’s Formula) and many of the mainstream brands are coming out with their own mineral makeup. However, the quality was terrible compared to the more expensive brands, the coverage was only fair, and most of them contain bismuth oxychloride (an ingredient which is known to irritate acne). Do not waste your money.
There are other online mineral makeup brands, including Raw Minerals and Naked Minerals, but I found their prices to be much higher than bareMinerals. For example, the starter kit for Raw Minerals is $90 (vs. $60 for bareMinerals). They also continue to charge you $60 every 60 days for refills. Naked Minerals charges $126 for their fundamentals kit – nearly twice the price!
My favorite products by far were from Bare Escentuals bareMinerals. I look completely natural when I wear it and it gives great coverage. If there is an area that needs more concealing, I just use little extra of their Multi-Tasking Face Concealer both under and over the foundation. It doesn’t get in my pores and I never break out from it. Most foundations do make me break out so this is enough to make me buy it on its own. There is also a MATTE Foundation for oilier skin. bareMinerals also has SPF in both the foundation and the Mineral Veil and it is non-chemical sunscreen. I always break out from regular chemical sunscreen, so again this was enough on its own for me to buy it. Having my skin look so great was the ultimate decision maker.
You should definitely buy this product and try it out. The best way to start out with bareMinerals is with their bareMinerals Get Started Kit, which is only $60. You get so much in this kit that it is an unbelievable value.
bareMinerals Get Started Kit ($174 value). Buy now for only $60!
The Starter Kit includes:
- TWO shades of bareMinerals SPF 15 Foundation: (.06 oz/2g)
- bareMinerals Mineral Veil (.1 oz/3)
- bareMinerals Warmth All-Over Face Color (.06oz/2g)
- Full Flawless Face Brush
- Flawless Application Face Brush
- Maximum Coverage Concealer Brush
- How-to DVD
- Bonus Gift-mini bareVitamins Skin Rev-er Upper
I didn’t end up using one of the items (the free bonus skin rev-er upper), but I saved a ton of money since I would have had to spend $174 if I had bought everything separately. I also suggest you buy the bareMinerals Multi-Tasking Face Concealer at the same time. Bisque is their most versatile color and even worked on me with my fair skin. It works well with the concealer brush that comes in the kit. If you have particularly oily or sensitive skin, get the MATTE foundation as well. Even with the kit and the foundation purchased separately, you get an excellent deal that can not be matched buying them separately or from other companies.
My other favorite products from Bare Escentuals:
- bareMinerals Foundation and bareMinerals MATTE Foundation
- bareMinerals Multi-Tasking Face Concealer
- bareMinerals Rare Minerals Blemish Therapy
- bareMinerals Mineral Veil with SPF 20
- bareMinerals Blush
- All bareMinerals eyeshadows
- Bare Escentuals brushes, especially their concealer brush and flawless face brush

Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging hasn’t come out yet in my country, but I’d say a good movie with humor and teenagers would be Jawbreaker (it’s like Mean Girls, only in the 90′s). It’s kind of intense at the beginning and the humor is a little dark but it’s over all a really good movie.
I’m sorry to hear you had such a problem with bismuth oxychloride. It gets a lot of bad press since people tend to believe everything they read on the internet. It’s true that it does make some people break out, as will many ingredients in different makeup types and brands. For example, I break out from anything that has chemical sunscreen in it, whether it’s designed for acne prone skin or not.
Bare Minerals’ products do not all contain bismuth oxychloride and the foundation I recommend is their new Matte foundation, which does not contain this ingredient. In general, the makeup you have to stay away from, no matter what the brand or texture, are those that are shiny or reflective. These usually contain bismuth oxychloride or mica, which will make you break out if you are sensitive to them.
I would love to know which makeup brands and products you have found to be best for your own skin so that I can check them out.
Thanks for the feedback!
