Acne Medicine and Makeup: Best Two in -One Products

It’s difficult to combine acne medicine and makeup into one product without overdrying your skin. In fact, you have to be extremely careful not to add too much acne treatment medicine with a makeup that already has some in it. However, there are a few products that have gotten great reviews from users. They work best on people with mild acne and/or very oily skin. Here’s a round-up of the best ones in my own order of preference:

Clinique Acne Solutions Liquid Foundation: This foundation for acne prone skin is particularly good for those with oily skin. It provides moderate coverage and a matte finish. You will still have to carry around some blotting powder or papers, but it does help with mild acne. It also has some colors for very fair skin.

Bare Minerals Rare Minerals Blemish Therapy: This is described as a treatment, but it actually provides some coverage as well. It contains Bare Escentuals rare minerals, so it doesn’t interact with any other acne medicine you are using. I like the fact that I can put some on at night and it reduces the redness of any pimples I put it on.

Murad Acne Treatment Concealer: This will only help with very small blemishes, but gives decent coverage. Since it also contains salicylic acid, be careful about combining it with your current treatment, if you use one. It comes in the perfect size for carrying around in your purse.

Cover FX Acne Treat and Conceal Kit: This kit contains travel size versions of a full line of Cover FX acne products. People mostly love the primer, which has the acne medicine in it. Otherwise, this is best for people with very oily skin since it can be chalky looking. Also, you have to get lucky with the colors since they are very limited. However, it’s a terrific value.

Philosophy’s On a Clear Day Acne Clarifying Primer: A primer that contains salicylic acid for treatment, Philosphy’s primer is more for preventing breakouts and smoothing over anything you already have. Helps makeup go on more smoothly.

Neutrogena Skin Clearing Liquid Foundation: Your only real drugstore cosmetic option, Neutrogena’s foundation doesn’t provide much coverage but can be good for people with very mild acne. You can’t beat the price.

The Best Foundation Makeup for Rosacea

Finding the best foundation makeup for rosacea can be an incredible challenge. Often, the foundations available don’t conceal your redness well enough, or they make your face look flaky or unnatural. Fortunately, there are so many new formulations available that this doesn’t have to be the case anymore. Many high-end makeup lines, and some drugstore brands, have come out with fantastic products targeted towards skin with redness. Here are a few helpful tips on how to successfully find the best makeup for your own rosacea, conceal the redness, and still look natural and beautiful.

1. Go Green

It may sound crazy and look a little scary, but green face products can be your rosacea’s best friend. When used correctly, the green tint will neutralize the redness without making you look like the Wicked Witch of the West. The key is to find a well-made product that can act as a base underneath your foundation. For instance, Make Up For Ever’s HD Microperfecting Primer in green is a thin, silky primer that you apply before foundation that will help eliminate the redness in your skin. For this step, I would recommend investing in a good quality green tinted product, although there are some drugstore options. Another fantastic product that has many purposes is Make Up For Ever’s 5 Camouflage Cream Palette, which combines many different shades of creamy concealer, as well as a green concealer, to make your perfect match.

2. Foundation Makeup for Rosacea
As you probably already know, foundation is one of the key elements to perfect looking skin. However, most women find it very difficult to find a foundation that perfectly matches their skin, resulting in frustration and an unnatural look. Though you can find many good foundations at the drugstore, investing in a high quality foundation gives you an advantage in the quest for perfect skin. Make Up For Ever’s HD Invisible Cover Foundation is famous in the beauty world, used by professional makeup artists, celebrities, and thousands of women. It is so popular because of it’s silky texture, fantastic coverage, longwearing ability, and huge range of shades.

3. How to Apply Makeup to Conceal Rosacea
Even if you have all the right products, you still may be frustrated by your mediocre results if you aren’t applying the products properly. The first step is to thoroughly cleanse and moisturize your skin with products targeted towards rosacea. Clinique has a line of products called Clinique Redness Solutions meant just for this purpose, and at drugstores you can find the Eucerin Redness Relief line, which uses soothing ingredients to fight redness.

Next, apply your green tinted primer or concealer to areas with redness, using either your fingers or a clean brush. After this has soaked into your skin, apply a foundation that matches your skin tone using a damp sponge or a foundation brush. You can even use a stippling brush such as the Professional Platinum Stippling Brush #44 from the Sephora collection for an airbrushed look. Finally, dust your face with a translucent powder like the Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Powder, or a yellow tinted powder such as the Clinique Redness Solutions Instant Relief Mineral Powder to set your foundation. Now you’re ready to finish your makeup look and face the day looking beautiful and redness free!

The Best Makeup and Cleansers for Dry Acne Prone Skin

Finding good makeup and cleansers for dry acne prone skin seems to be nearly impossible at times. Products that treat acne tend to be drying, while those for dry skin can easily make you break out further. And yet there are plenty of us who suffer from both dry skin and acne at the same time. Whether it is due to using too much acne cream or just the sun, wind, weather or age wreaking havoc on our skin, we still need a solution. I’ve found a few that have been working well for me this winter, along with some tips to help prevent the dry skin and acne at the same time.

Cleansers that help prevent dryness

Boscia Makeup Break Up Cool Cleansing Oil

Often during the winter we are inside air conditioned or heated rooms, and then we go out into the cold and hope that our skin can cope with the environment. Our lips get chapped, skin becomes raw, and many people get red and itchy. The dryness itself can cause flakiness that blocks our already acne prone pores, causing more breakouts.

To help prevent dryness in the first place, it’s important to use gentle cleansers and moisturizers every day. Stay away from all the strong acne face washes in the winter if you are prone to any dryness.

My favorite cleansers are two that I alternate, depending on how my skin is feeling. To thoroughly remove makeup and calm my skin, I use Boscia Makeup Breakup Cool Cleansing Oil. Although it’s an oil, it washes off totally without any oily residue. In fact, I use it all year long. When my skin is a little oily I will sometimes follow it with another face wash or Boscia’s herbal tonic to make sure everything is cleaned off.

Non-foaming cleanser for dry acne prone skin

The other cleanser I love is Fresh Soy Face Cleanser. It is gentle and non-foaming, but gets rid of all makeup and dirt, including eye makeup. What I love about this cleanser is that it actually delivers on the promise of cleaning your skin, but it doesn’t leave the film that most non-foaming face washes do. The only downside, for some, is the fragrance. Since it is for sensitive skin, the soy cleanser doesn’t have a perfume smell. It has a scent that is a little reminiscent of cucumbers. It took a little getting used to at first, but now I actually like it.

Moisturizers that help prevent and treat dryness

The experts always tell people with acne to still use moisturizers. If your skin is oily, you really don’t need much moisturizer at all. If anything, I always stayed away from them. However, when your skin is dry it is a tremendous challenge to find a moisturizer that provides enough hydration without producing more pimples.

Clinique Moisturizer for Dry Acne Prone SkinMy current favorite is a basic drugstore brand called Cerave. It was recommended by my dermatologist and is effective and cheap at the same time, so you can’t go wrong. When I need a little more moisture, I top it off with some of my favorite Clinique Moisture Surge gel, which always feel calm and soothing on my skin.

Foundation makeup for dry skin with acne

My rule of thumb with dry skin and acne is to stay away from any makeup that promises to ‘hydrate’ your skin. Those products have always made me break out. Instead, get your moisture from your moisturizer and use makeup to even out and conceal. That’s not to say that you should use a foundation for acne prone skin. Those tend to be drying. I always aim to find something neutral that won’t stick to any dry flakes.

Clean Slate Natural Face PrimerBefore any foundation, however, always use a primer. This helps keep the makeup go on smoothly and last longer, which is especially important if your skin and a little dry and flaky. My favorite primer for acne prone skin is Tarte’s Clean Slate Natural Face Primer. I’ve written a review of Clean Slate in the past since it is the only primer I have ever used which didn’t make me break out.

Korres Wild Rose Mineral Powder Foundation for Dry Acne Prone SkinFor foundation, there are two that I’ve been using this winter that I love. For a mineral powder foundation, I have fallen in love with the new Korres Wild Rose Mineral Foundation. It is the only one I have found which doesn’t bunch up in my crease lines or look powdery on my skin. I don’t think I would recommend it for oily skin, but it has been a godsend this winter. I actually use the sponge that it comes with, but some people prefer to use a mineral makeup brush.

I have a new liquid foundation that I have started using recently when I want fuller coverage and a more polished look. It is the new one from Lancome – Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra. When you put it on, this foundation leaves a very smooth finish along with excellent coverage. I haven’t even been using concealer with it since the coverage is so good. The only downside with this foundation is the fragrance. Like all Lancome products, it has a distinctive smell that ultra sensitive people may not like. Luckily, I havent’ had a problem. Last tips for treatment and prevention of dry skin and acne

Getting rid of the dry skin and acne is the biggest challenge. This is where patience is crucial. Many people will tell you to exfoliate to get rid of the flakiness. For my own sensitive acne prone skin, I’ve found that even gentle scrubbing will only make matters worse. It may get rid of some of the dry flakes at first, but the exfoliation itself irritates my pores, which then causes me to break out more. Treat the breakouts and what happens? More dry skin and acne. Just stick with a regimen of gentle cleansing, moisturizer, and protection through primer and foundation. Your skin will eventually balance out. Of course, then the season changes and we have to adjust again!

Dry Skin Acne Moisturizer

Best Acne Moisturizers:

As I mentioned in my review of Best Acne Lotions, there are several different types of acne lotions and acne moisturizers and it is difficult to determine which one is best for your skin type. A moisturizer safe for acne prone skin and one that will help dry skin with acne is particularly difficult to find.  I discovered Clinique’s Moisture Surge a few years ago when my skin started getting a little dry in places and have used it ever since.
